If you have been to the North Shore before, then you know that the crowds during certain times of the year can be insane. For most people, not having all eyes on you is a perk of eloping, if not the entire point! If you are wanting to avoid the crowds on your elopement day, then try some of these following tips.

Elope on a weekday:

Weekends are great for typical weddings. It gives flexibility to guests who are traveling and makes it more convenient for everyone. But when you are eloping, you really only have to worry about you two. For the North Shore, I would suggest Monday through Thursdays! So many people take Friday off and head up for a long weekend. One thing to note is that some small businesses are closed Monday. 

A Winter Elopement:

The North Shore of Minnesota is notorious for having epic snow storms. While this is true, this is also a simple way to avoid crowds. I am not saying that you should wait until you see a huge storm in the forecast and book an elopement at the last minute. But I am saying that the winter months see less trail traffic than other months. There are many northern Minnesota residents who love to snowshoe, so each trail will not be entirely empty. But I promise you, you will not feel the full fledged tourist season you would see in the summer or fall. And chances are, your Airbnb will have a sauna, so you can warm up after a day of cold! 

Something to consider is that Bentleyville is a huge attraction to Duluth, and you will see the effects of that all December long. Consider pushing off the date until January!

Morning Time:

The early bird gets the worm, I will use this reference for those morning people who want the perfect sunrise elopement as well as those who want more solitude. Fun fact, the sun rises over Lake Superior, so those epic golden hour shots can be found the first hour or so after sunrise. Also, who doesn’t want to watch the sunrise over Lake Superior while in your wedding gown and tux? What a special and unique moment. 

Use trails that aren’t as known! 

There are over 300 miles of the Superior Hiking Trail, you’re bound to find a portion that you love! While Palisade Head, Gooseberry and Split Rock Lighthouse are all amazing, they are quite crowded at popular times. If you’re looking for trails with views (with less people), check out the trails I have listed below! 

Wolf Rock Overlook (Two Harbors): This spot is breathtaking (especially in the fall), it is not nearly as popular as other trails. I will say that it is a really steep climb in the beginning, but the views are so worth it! *Pro Tip: This trail is right down the road from Rustic Inn, do yourself a favor and go for a hike then stop and get yourself the best pie on the North Shore!

Day Hill Loop (Two Harbors): This is part of the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, but making it all the way to Day Hill is fun and a little challenging, with great views!

Ely’s Peak (Duluth): This overlook may not have panoramic views of Lake Superior, but the views of the fall foliage is no joke.

Section 13 of the Superior Hiking Trail (Finland, MN): This trail has overlooks that show off the forests of Northern Minnesota.

Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory Loop (Duluth):

This loop is a relatively easy loop that has views of the city of Duluth as well as Lake Superior.

This is a shorter hike, perfect for those who want to get views of Lake Superior as well as direct access to the lake. It would be a perfect choice for those wanting to have an intimate picnic.
