Ahhh… Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes. We have the bluffs of southeast Minnesota, the start of the Mississippi River, the Boundary Waters and we can’t forget about the shores of Lake Superior.
Within all of these areas of Minnesota there are cute little towns that offer hospitable stays for your elopement get away!
If you’re a couple who is looking to hike through the bluffs, with scenic overlooks of the vast deciduous forest below, then Southeast Minnesota might be right for you. There are a handful of towns that I would suggest staying in, I’ll also include some places to stay as well!
This small town is full of history and charm… and bluffs! They are known for their Red Wing Shoes, but the area has a great downtown scene while also offering great hikes!
Where to Stay…
St. James Hotel- This place is for my history lovers! Established in 1875, this place is rustic and fabulous.
What to Do…
Hiking! One of their most popular hikes is the Barn Bluff Hike. It is the highest point in the area and has awesome views!

This is an even smaller town than Red Wing (I’m talking under 1,000 people) but attracts a lot of cyclers. Lanesboro has amazing views and many bicycle trails. They also have the Root River where people tube during the summer.
Where to Stay…
Root River Inn & Suites- Another historical find that was newly remodeled in just 2021.
Hotel Lanesboro- right in downtown and newly remodeled rooms, so beautiful!
What to Do…
Bike! This place is known for it biking and has well groomed biking trails. There are multiple rental shops for biking.

This area is known for being a dark sky sanctuary (one of twelve in the world) and for its pristine quietness. Literally it is so quiet, most of the lakes are canoe only. This is the most unplugged you’re going to get- so if you are looking for a true “get away from everyone and everything” then this place is for you! *To note if you are planning o staying in the BWCA, you will need a permit to enter! You must choose a specific entry point and date, pay a $6 fee per permit plus user fees, and pick it up in person at an issue station.
Where to Stay…
Ely is the closest town to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). There are multiple options for Airbnb’s within the area, but here are some places to consider.
Northern Air Lodge on Mitchell Lake. They offer multiple cabins ranging in size!
Some of my favorite AirBNB’s from the area.

My personal favorite spot on the north shore! This town is situated directly on the water, making it a great spot to watch the sunrise. It has the Pincushion Mountains, great food and an overall chill vibe. This place is literally PERFECT for any eloping couple!
Where to Stay…
Hungry Hippie Hostel- This place is perfect for a microwedding. It offers 5 rooms inside the hostel and multiple canvas tents for guests. The owners are so sweet and have a little hobby farm on the land.
Great Northern Cabins-these cabins are for those who want a unique experience. They are dry, meaning no running water. They offer a sauna and beautiful designs within.
What to Do…
Hike! They have the Pincushion Mountains with an awesome trail system. Sauna it up at Sisu and Loyly. Hit up Voyageurs Brewery. Watch the sunrise at Artist’s Point.

Located about 35 minutes north of Duluth, this spot is surrounded by great hikes, food and vibes.
Where to stay…
Haven’s on Superior- This company offers an array of dreamy cabins on the north shore. These cabins offer saunas and a great location!
Wildhaven- This small business offers yurts.. Perfect for your glampers out there! They are out in the wilderness and have the most laid back vibes!
What to Do…
Hike and Eat! This area has some great state parks including Gooseberry, Split Rock and Tettegouche. They also have some great spots for my foodies out there! From great coffee at Cedar Coffee company, beer from Castle Danger and a slice of pie from Rustic Inn. (yes I said it, Rustic Inn… not Betty’s).

Duluth is the fifth largest city in the state, a perfect place for those who don’t want to be completely surrounded by nature. There are different neighborhoods all with different vibes.
Where to Stay…
Since Duluth is so big, there are so many hotels to choose from. The Oliver Inn, located downtown, offers spacious historic rooms (all recently renovated).
Pier B Resort is a favorite as it has a great view of the Lift Bridge as well as a great restaurant and a sauna experience by Cedar and Stone.
What to Do…
Take in all the unique shopping spots and unique neighborhoods. The new upcoming area in Duluth is the Lincoln Park Craft District. This area has some of the best coffee, restaurants and shops. It’s like the new Canal Park, just not as touristy. Duluth is about 25 minutes north of Jay Cooke State Park which has some awesome hikes and views. Spirit Mountain offers an alpine coaster where you will get awesome views of Lake Superior!

Minnesota has something to offer every couple. Whether you want to say your vows on the shores of Lake Superior, in a canoe breaking through the Boundary Waters or on a hike in the bluffs! Minnesota is my home and I would love to help you plan the perfect elopement!
